16 - 17 August, 2004 Turtle Survival Alliance Annual Meeting
2 - 4 April, 2004 - Paula Morris
will be at the
WWPSA expo at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, California. While
the purpose of the weekend is to promote retail business, it also pitches to the
pet-buying public in the form of exhibits, educational events, and celebrity
appearances. It draws an immense gate to its 3-day event.
The World Chelonian Trust believes it benefits the reptiles to have a table to
pass out educational material since so many retail outlets lack even basic care
information on the turtles and tortoises they sell. The WCT is a guest
participant invited by the California Turtle and Tortoise Club.
WCT will have tri-folds and mini-flyers directing visitors to our exceptional
and comprehensive web site at www.chelonia.org, plus a selection of general care
sheets covering aquatics, box turtles, sulcatas, Russian tortoises, hatchlings,
and other species prevalent in the California reptile trade.
As a non-profit, WCT has been allowed to sell WCT memberships at the WWPSA
event, and we are grateful for the opportunity.
3 April, 2004 - Mike Pingleton will be representing the WCT
at the College of Veterinary
Medicine's Open House at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus.
The Vet-Med Open House draws thousands of people each year. The WCT will be
participating as part of the amphibian and reptile showcase taking place in the
second floor atrium.
3-4 April, 2004 - The WCT will have a table (manned by Darrell
Senneke) distributing care sheets and offering memberships at
ReptileFest in Chicago.
ReptileFest will be held Saturday and Sunday, April 3-4, 2004, at the University
of Illinois at Chicago, Physical Education Building, 901 W. Roosevelt Road
(between Halsted and Morgan), Chicago, Illinois. The exhibit will be open to the
public from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Saturday and Sunday.
Unlike most shows, the primary goal of ReptileFest is to educate the public
about reptiles and amphibians BEFORE they buy an animal. Because of this, no
animals are sold at the event (other than feeder mice and insects). All exhibit
animals are owned by CHS members or guests, people who can give accurate and
honest advice about keeping herps in captivity and who can make people aware of
important reptile and amphibian conservation issues.
Each year, nearly 3,000 people attend ReptileFest (in addition to 100+ CHS
member and guest exhibitors.) These people visit the event not only to learn
about reptiles and amphibians, but also to purchase supplies for their own
animals and to collect herp-related art, books, and t-shirts.--
